How to Start Hardmode

Hardmode is the back half of Terraria: tougher enemies, new biomes and ores, and the mechanical bosses. You enter it the moment you defeat the Wall of Flesh, and there's no going back — so it pays to be ready.

Beating the Wall of Flesh

  1. 1Build a long, flat bridge across the Underworld so you can run while you fight.
  2. 2Drop a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava (you get it from Voodoo Demons down there). This summons the Wall of Flesh.
  3. 3Run away from the wall the whole fight while shooting its eyes and mouth — it speeds up as it loses health, so don't get cornered.

A ranged or magic weapon and a few Ironskin and Regeneration potions make this far easier than meleeing it.

What changes when you win

  • The Hallow biome appears, and your world evil (Corruption or Crimson) spreads faster.
  • New ores — Cobalt, Mythril and Adamantite (or their alternates) — generate underground.
  • Stronger enemies show up everywhere, and the three mechanical bosses become summonable.

Prepare before the switch

  • Make the best pre-Hardmode armor and weapons you can — Molten gear and a strong ranged option carry you into the early grind.
  • Stock healing and buff potions; the difficulty spike is real.
  • Consider containing your world evil with a few cleared tunnels so the spread doesn't overrun your base.

FAQ

Which boss starts Hardmode in Terraria?

The Wall of Flesh. Defeating it in the Underworld permanently converts your world to Hardmode, adding the Hallow, new ores, tougher enemies and the mechanical bosses.

How do you summon the Wall of Flesh?

Drop a Guide Voodoo Doll into the lava in the Underworld. The doll is dropped by Voodoo Demons that carry it over the lava there.

Can you undo Hardmode?

No. Once the Wall of Flesh is beaten the change is permanent for that world, so finish your pre-Hardmode goals first.
