How is Terraria DPS calculated?

DPS multiplies your average damage per hit by your attacks per second. Average hit accounts for the weapon's base damage, your total % damage bonus, the reforge multiplier, critical-strike chance (a crit deals double), and the target's defense, which removes half a point of damage per point of defense. Attacks per second is 60 divided by the weapon's use time after attack-speed bonuses.

Does enemy defense reduce my damage?

Yes. Each point of an enemy's defense removes 0.5 damage from every hit. Bosses like Golem (26), Duke Fishron (50) and Moon Lord (50+) have high defense, so low-damage fast weapons lose a large share of their listed DPS — which is why this calculator scores against each boss's real defense.

Does ammo add damage in Terraria?

Yes. A gun, bow or launcher adds its ammo's flat damage to the weapon's own before percentage bonuses apply, so the bullet, arrow or rocket you load changes your real DPS.
